POSITION: Maintenance Mechanic


DEPARTMENT: Facilities


REPORTS TO: Facilities Manager


REVIEWED BY: Director of Materials Management and Facilities, Facilities Manager and Human Resources

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for efficient and effective routine and preventive maintenance of facilities as well as department operations such that day-to-day maintenance related needs of all departments are met and facilities are in best possible condition. This includes, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.





  1. Develops smooth/efficient operations to ensure quality work, productive use of time, and good common sense.
  2. Maintains Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning equipment, Boilers, Exhaust Fans, Backup Generator, and related equipment using scheduled preventative maintenance processes and documentation.
  3. Troubleshoots and diagnoses complex equipment failures, plumbing, and electrical.
  4. Installs motors, controls, and equipment related to HVAC, Boilers, and Exhaust Fans.
  5. Maintains OSHA compliance including maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS) as needed and a clean, safe work area.
  6. Maintain and conduct Preventative Maintenance files and protocols for facilities equipment and systems.
  7. Proactively identifies areas in which patient safety and comfort may be compromised by doing daily rounds and brings forward suggestions for improvement.
  8. Carries on-call pager as scheduled as well as performing early shift duties.
  9. Performs snow removal duties as assigned.
  10. Exhibits computer systems knowledge and proficiency as necessary to perform job functions.
  11. Demonstrates the attitudes and behaviors of The South Bend Clinic Service Standards.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned when appropriate.
  13. Adheres to HIPAA guidelines set forth in Clinic policies and procedures.

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

CFC Certification is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Previous experience in general maintenance. Demonstrated skill level in HVAC, electrical, plumbing or general carpentry preferred. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret blueprints, instruction manuals and regulatory documents. Excellent interpersonal communication and skills. Maturity to work under pressure, to meet established deadlines and to handle issues that may arise with peers and physicians.


Special Demands/Requirements:
Drive to various clinic and offsite storage locations.

Physical Requirements:

Visual Acuity:

Visual acuity to perform an activity such as operating a machine where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performs mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature.


Environmental Conditions:

The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions./The worker is subject to extreme cold (below 32) or extreme heat (above 100) for more than one hour./The worker is subject to extreme noise level and/or viration of extremities or whole body./The worker is subject to hazards including moving mechanical parts, electricity, high places, or chemicals./The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system.
